This act ma

Exact DefinitionEdit

This act made it possible for new western states to establish colleges for their citizens through Federal land grants. It was a major boost to higher education in America.

The new land-grant institutions, which emphasized agriculture and mechanic arts, opened opportunities to thousands of farmers and working people previously excluded from higher education. The land-grant has improved the lives of millions of Americans. This was not the case in the early stages. At the time the grants were established, there was a separation of races. This situation was rectified when the Second Morrill Act was passed and expanded the system of grants to include blacks.
